Art in the Community Project: Barley and Barkway

The children of Barley and Barkway Federation School and the residents of Margaret House Residential and Dementia Care Home have been meeting up as part of an on going project to bring the younger and older members of the community together so they can enjoy each other’s company and friendship.

Over several session residents and children, aged from 4 through to 94 have designed, drawn and painted a large collage that showcases the different aspects of their local villages.  This painting followed on from the children coming over to Margaret House for a very successful Christmas Concert and is just the start of many different activities that they will be running together in future including literacy, cultural and arts events as both age groups have benefited, with the children saying “It has been really nice working with different, older people it was like being with Aunts and Uncles”.

Resident Enid Denchfield said “They are just so enjoyable to be with and it is lovely to hear about all that they have going on and to have the chance to be part of some of it.”

After months of planning and painting the picture was finally ready for unveiling ready in time to celebrate National Care Home day, whose theme this year is art in the community.

The finished painting will be on display in Margaret House and the home will be holding an open day for National Care Home Day on Friday 28th June, and also on Wednesday 17th July for Herts Care Providers Association Good Care Week, so anyone is very welcome to please pop in and have a look at it.
