A Royston takeaway is celebrating after winning a coveted accolade.
British Raj Express, located opposite Royston Railway Station, won the national Best Takeaway category at the 16th annual British Curry Awards.
Regarded as the ‘Oscars of the curry industry’, the British Curry Awards celebrate the cream of the best curry restaurants in the country.
The prestigious award was received by Royston born & bred managing director Safwaan Choudhury, who said: “It has always been a childhood dream to win a British Curry Award. I am thrilled for our team at British Raj Express; for our hard-working chefs, our management team, our friendly delivery drivers. I truly believe that teamwork makes the dream work.”
The news follows on from a year to remember for Safwaan’s team, who delivered in excess of 3000 complimentary meals to NHS & key workers across Herts, Cambs & London, as well as supporting footballer Marcus Rashford MBE in combating child food poverty during the October half-term.
Safwaan & his father Siraj were awarded with “Hero of Hertfordshire” accolades by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire in recognition of their service to the community. BBC News also made a report on the father & son duo’s endeavours during the height of the pandemic.
The 23-year-old summarised, “2020 was an extremely difficult year for everyone across the globe, but we have strived to rise to the challenge and serve our community. Thank you once again to our loyal customers for supporting us.”
