Escape to The City… Chelsea Flower Show

Escape to The City

ZEN Garden, Sanctuary Garden, Designed by Ishihara Kazuyuki

May sees spring in full bloom; with mild weather and longer days, it is the perfect month to get outdoors. This month, we are heading to an affluent area of London, well known for its boutique shops and high-end restaurants, as well as featuring its own reality TV show.

Chelsea, a well-known area of London, is also synonymous with the world’s most famous flower show, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The show returns this year from 24th – 28th of May. Every year, world-renowned garden designers, plant specialists, florists and nurseries come together to show off cutting-edge garden designs and inspirational floral exhibits. See the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea transformed with horticultural displays, as you stroll through gardens designed by famous designers and learn about rare flowers and plants.

The show, which has been held almost every year since 1912, is often attended by members of the Royal Family, and holds a significant amount of history. 1953 saw most members of the Royal Family attend, in celebration of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Since then, the show has increased in popularity, now attended by more than 150,000 visitors each year.

It is named by many as the floral equivalent of London Fashion Week!
Alternatively, if you are looking for an inexpensive day out, you can wander around the streets of Chelsea to discover the ‘Chelsea in Bloom’ displays and activities. Each year, dozens of shops, restaurants and hotels create themed floral displays to celebrate the show, which you can see for free. This creative display normally spreads along Sloane Street and continues through Sloane Square, King’s Road, Duke of York Square and Pavilion Road.

Look out for my articles each month!
