Grace Thompson – Publishing Assistant, 2015 – 2017
I joined The Listing team in November 2015 part time, counting leaflets, helping with magazine distribution, amending the What’s On section and updating the Organisations page as and when the entry details came in. After moving into their High Street premises in early 2016, I was given more control on the What’s On section and began working on external projects for customers. I finished my studies at Long Road Sixth Form and was offered to work for the team full time which then led to even more exciting things! From advert designing in the magazine, managing social media accounts for clients, writing content inside the magazine/online and even creating advertisements to go on screen at the Royston Picture Palace (not to mention creating banners for local events).
After working for The Listing Magazine and Marketing Company for my gap year, I started studying Journalism at the University of Lincoln in September 2017.
Working for The Listing helped me get accepted into my first choice university as I was able to show the work I had completed whilst working here, something which many students didn’t have in their portfolios. It also allowed me to have strong knowledge in InDesign and Photoshop which again, something which most students didn’t have.
I’m currently in my second year and I’m hoping to go down the online and social media side of journalism – such as captioned videos and easy-read online articles. Working for the team helped me with my confidence and taught me all the right tools as this gave me a head start in my studies and in work placements I’ve already taken.
If you’re creative and are passionate about what Royston and the surrounding villages have to offer, definitely consider joining The Listing – it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!

I have worked for The Listing as a part-time Editorial Assistant for the past five years, both in-house and remotely. The main aspects of my role include compiling the monthly What’s On calendar, assisting with database work and accounts, editing content for the magazine, and handling a few of my own small projects within the business.
Not only have I greatly enjoyed working for The Listing, and being part of such a small and friendly team, but the experience has also given my career a great boost! I am now studying International Business at The University of Lincoln, and my work at The Listing has opened the doors to new opportunities and helped me to secure work placement interviews. I start a year-long work placement as part of my degree with Bosch Rexroth UK this summer. The work experience I’ve gained at The Listing is a great talking-point in job interviews, and I have no doubt that it will aid me when looking for a graduate role in the business sector.

I have covered many things throughout my time at The Listing and it has been a huge journey for me not only in improving my skills within publishing and marketing, but I have developed a lot of personal skills too. Initially, I was in more of a supporting role for other people in the company and started off looking after the What’s On Section and having input on a client’s social media accounts.
Two years on and I had the opportunity to be the key person to decide on the content going into The Listing Magazines, and able to make recommendations and take more control on client’s social media accounts, I’ve even had the opportunity to create a marketing plan for a client. As well as this I’ve developed customer relationships, attended business networking events and corresponded with many people within the business which has improved my confidence greatly. I’ve developed a huge amount of skills which not only will help me if I choose to further my career into a similar industry, but skills that will help me no matter what job I move on to. I hope to continue working in this sort of area and using all the skills I’ve learnt but also to continue learning new skills too, digital marketing is something I enjoy so I look forward to furthering my knowledge in that area.
We are looking for self-starting A-level / BTEC students or equivalent to join our team, for a few hours per week to fit in around your school / college commitments, within office hours 9-5.30pm. Roles will be split accordingly to suit the individuals.
You must demonstrate a passion for marketing, publishing or journalism, have a keen attention to detail and creative flair.Core duties include:
• Liaising with contributors and compiling our what’s on calendar
• Writing and editing articles
• Preparing leaflets for our distribution team
• Keeping our website and social media channels up to date
