Museum Musings: The Green Gu… Plunge Pool

Royston & District Museum recently posted a photo on Facebook of a swimming pool that used to be in Royston and it brought back many memories. It was called the Green Plunge but, for many, it was known as the Green Gunge.
The pool was on the site that is now houses, on the roundabout at the Town Hall and Priory Gardens.
Lots of people remembered spending their summer holidays there. There was a cinema next door too. There was a window to buy sweets through. There was a swimming teacher who used to push kids with a broom to stop them holding on to the sides!
We have lots of photos in our collection, but it’s only when we share them and get to hear your stories that Royston’s history is brought to life. We’ll be adding more old photos to our Facebook page so please add your memories to them.
