My Local Life: Heidi Huntley -Vicar at Royston Parish Church
This month we chatted to Heidi Huntley, Vicar at Royston Parish Church. It has been a challenging few years for the church; first with a catastrophic fire and now with coronavirus. Here, for our ‘My Local Life’ column, we ask Heidi what life is like living in and around Royston.
How long have you been the Vicar of Royston Parish Church?
Almost eight years and it’s absolutely zoomed by!
What’s your favourite local place to eat?
Any Indian restaurant or Fish ‘n’ Chicken for a take-away.
Your favourite local Shop?
Ladd’s – a fabulous independent shop with the loveliest staff, selling a wonderful selection of cards, toys, gifts, cake decorations, chocolates and so much more.
What makes you happy?
Most things make me happy and especially being with friends and family. It’s also such a joy to see people of all ages realise that God loves them.
Royston Parish Church has faced some big challenges – first the fire, and then Covid. How have you coped as a Church community?
Primarily by God’s grace! And just as your question states, we’re a community and everyone’s been amazingly hopeful and positive throughout. We know we will be back in church again, hopefully by next summer.
What is your favourite film?
Anything with Tom Hanks in it!
What do you love about your work?
It is the greatest privilege to be with people in the saddest and most joyous times of their lives, and to know that by taking a baptism, wedding or funeral service for them you have made a difference.
What is your most valued possession?
I’m not really into material possessions and at the risk of sounding pious, my faith is my most valuable possession. It really has made all the difference to life’s ups and downs.
What is your favourite Royston experience?
The Town Centre – I love being around the Church and the High Street because it’s where I normally see most people. I just love bumping into folk, watching the world go by as I stop for a cup of tea or simply have people say hello to me, whether they know me or not. I can’t wait to be back out there again as the lockdown restrictions continue to lift.
Do you have some words for the wider community in Royston during these times?
Please be assured of my prayers for you all during these really difficult times, and especially for any of you who have suffered in any way because of the virus.
Royston Parish Church, Melbourn Street, Royston, SG8 7BP.
