Royston Kite Festival

Royston Kite Festival

Royston’s blessed with one of the finest stretches of accessible downland anywhere in the East of England, and don’t our sportsmen and women, walkers, runners, dog owners and nature-lovers make good use of it?

The Heath’s army of users usually enjoy its wide open spaces singly, in couples, or small groups – but once a year there’s an event which brings Royston families to Therfield Heath in their thousands, and it’s coming up on 4th August.

Royston’s Kite Festival is a true family event, because apart from the spectacle of the kites and the gleaming chrome of the classic cars, there’s a host of stalls to provide interest and plenty of activities for the children. Apart from that, the Heath’s close-cut grass provides limitless picnicking opportunities. Rotary’s Kite supremo Ray Munden says that it’s family groups who make up the majority of the Festival’s visitors, and it’s not hard to see why.

Now heading for its 30th birthday, this year’s Kite Festival will surely be entertaining the children of mums and dads who first came as youngsters themselves in the early 90s. That’s quite a record.

Pack up that cold-box, pick up the picnic rug, and we’ll see you on the Heath!
