When Ken Charles came to Royston in 1969 to open Hertfordshire’s first Middle school, Greneway. Basketball in any form was non-existent. Ken, however, came with a pedigree of coaching successful schools, clubs, the English schools and England Juniors (under 19s), so no wonder basketball was to become a big feature of Royston Sport.
Corvus Cornix grew out of the Greneway Mini-Basketball for both boys and girls. Both young men and women then figured well in local leagues and the women became the number two team in the country.
It has always been the policy of Corvus to encourage players to assist with coaching and several have gone on to qualify as teachers and coaches.
Since the opening of the Royston Leisure Centre basketball has played a key part in the programme training on a Thursday from close of school ‘til 9pm – at 5pm the 7-12 year olds and then from 6pm the Under 16s, before the adult men and women take to the court from 7.30pm.
Every one is welcome and very many have taken up the sport in mid teens and made a success of it. A more recent initiative has been the women’s sessions at Greneway on a Monday evening from 7.30-9.00pm.
New members welcome of all ages and abilities.

Melbourn Netball Club started up over 8 years ago when a group of women wanted to get back into the game of netball. Many hadn’t played for over 20 years and most hadn’t played since they left school. It all started out as a way of getting fit but very soon the women wanted to play competitively so formed a team called Swifts, and joined the friendly summer league.
Following their success and winning their division they then joined the competitive Winter League. Their success has been undisputed, rising up the divisions and forming a second Swifts team who have had equal success.
