Melbourn Community Allotment

Fancy spending some time in the fresh air and getting outdoors? Now is the perfect time especially now the good weather is on the way.

Two years ago, Melbourn Community Allotment on the Moor was an overgrown mess. Now, thanks to the work of a few, dedicated volunteers, it is a well organised, highly attractive site producing a range of fruit, vegetables, and even cut flowers.

It is currently looking for new helpers to join the group from 10am-12pm on Friday mornings. Helpers get lots of fresh air, gentle exercise, and produce to take home.
Tools and refreshments are also provided and all abilities of gardeners are welcomed.

“It was always our intention to invite those with mental health problems or the socially isolated to join us,” says Diana Barker, the group’s leader, “But anyone wanting fresh air, friendship, and gentle exercise is more than welcome.”

There are many ways gardening can help with your mental health.

• Gardening is great exercise – 3/4 hours gardening can burn as many calories as an hour of exercising.
• Gardening is theraputic – it can take your mind off everyday stresses and just focus on the garden
• It’s a good way to vent anger – Certain areas can be great to release some anger and cutting and chopping helps prevent plants from overgrowing!

No experience of gardening is necessary. Free refreshments and tools are provided. All helpers can take home the produce they have helped to grow.
