School of Dancing
The Stephanie Prior School of Dancing (SPSD) was founded over 50 years ago by the late Stephanie Prior, a hugely popular member of the local
community. When Stephanie passed away in 2005, her daughter Tara’s world fell apart, and it didn’t take Tara long to realise that she needed to continue her Mum’s legacy. Tara shared her Mum’s passion for dance; she had danced since the age of 3 and helped her in classes as she got older, so she balanced full time employment with continuing the dance school.
After the birth of her daughter Danica, Tara made the big step of expanding the school on a full time basis.
Fast forward to now, and the school teaches over 450 students, and is housed in its own premises on Lumen Road.
Many students have been dancing with SPSD since they were 3 years old and some are still with the school, now in their 20’s and 30’s. In some cases, Tara is now teaching their children!
The school offers a wide range of classes, from ‘Mini Movers’ for children from 18 months right through to adults, some in their 80’s, who enjoy their weekly Ballroom and Latin Classes.
Tara specialises in Freestyle Disco, Street Dance, Ballroom and Latin American, Rock &Roll & lyrical but also offers classes with other members of her faculty in Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz, Contemporary and Musical Theatre.
SPSD has a strong competition squad who travel all over the UK taking part in Freestyle Competitions and achieving a great deal of success, and children are given the opportunity to take examinations with the National Association of Teachers of Dance and The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance. Look out for a full scale production of Dance, Song and Drama at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage every two years. Tara wholeheartedly believes in equal opportunities, so every student is given the chance to participate in these shows.
SPSD has an incredible family spirit and Tara prides herself on offering a safe and comfortable environment in which to learn new skills, and students gain a feeling of belonging to something very special.
