Domestic Abuse: A Note For Employers

Domestic Abuse: A Note For Employers

In the months during and after the first lockdown, Herts Domestic Abuse Helpline saw a 32% increase in calls and emails. As we near the end of the second lockdown, we want to remind everyone that they are not alone.
For the 16 Days of Action, (Nov 25 – Dec 10) we’re highlighting how employers can be part of a community response to domestic abuse. This is Jane’s* story:
“My partner Henry* would drive to my work to watch if I was leaving work with anyone. I was constantly on edge. I was afraid to talk to anyone male at work in case Henry was watching. I had texts all day ranging from loving ones to threatening ones.
I eventually informed my manager. I got a non-molestation order, but my employer put in no procedures to ensure I was safe at work. I felt very alone. It would have been so valuable for me to have known that my job was secure and to have some time off. I had to manage debt as a result of economic abuse – some financial advice would have really made a difference.
I urge all employers to take notice if a colleague’s productivity or work patterns change. Don’t make a judgement and be open minded. Ultimately, be there for them.”
We’re calling on all companies to have a domestic abuse policy. Visit Employers’ Initiative on Domestic Abuse’s toolkit (www.eida.org.uk/) and Hestia’s Everyone’s Business toolkit (www.hestia.org/pages/category/everyones-business).
