Explore Cambridge

Our wonderful cover photography this May is by Caroline Baker, taken in Cambridge in Summer and Autumn during walks from Lammas Land, along the River Cam and down to Sheep’s Green.

It’s a favourite walk of hers as, timed well, it can be quiet and picturesque. The swans make their presence known on both the river and the path alongside, with the punters and people enjoying walks having to negotiate their way around them!

Caroline’s photos inspired our explore Cambridge article, which includes a few family fun things to do in Cambridge this summer, a chance to explore a new area of the city on our doorsteps.

A short drive or train ride away, why not explore some of these free family activities in Cambridge as summer beckons?

Lammas Land
Head to Lammas Land – the green area that greets you as you drive into Cambridge on the A603 at Newnham. There’s plenty of fun here for families – feed the ducks, watch the punts go by, enjoy the play park – and in those summer months, enjoy a day out at Lammas Land Paddling Pool. It opens on the 30th May and until Sunday 11th September this year. Take a picnic for a fabulous free day out!

Dinosaur Safari
Cherry Hinton Hall Park is open to the public and includes a play area and water play area for children and young families. This summer, there are two fabulous new augmented reality games to enjoy too – simply download the Love Exploring app on your phone, and search for Cambridge. You can choose from a dinosaur safari or space walk – explore the park and watch the characters appear in front of you and take part in the interactive quiz. What better way to encourage fresh air and exercise in your little ones as they hunt for dinosaurs! And if you fancy an escape just for you, there are also three 1.5km trails throughout the park – Mindfulness, Tree Trail and a Sensory Walk. Simply open the app on a mobile device and away you go.

Dinky Doors
Take a closer look in Cambridge, and you may just spot some dinky doors. These miniature sculptures are hidden just out of plain sight throughout the city centre. The tour is available to download online, or you can print it off and explore with a map and coordinates. There’s a small charge – £7.50 – which we think is incredible value for a fun day out with your children as you explore the beautiful city of Cambridge.
