Friends of Therfield Heath and Greens

Be careful where you tread! Spring is the time when you might see Toadflax Leaf beetles. Nationally scarce and on the Red List of threatened species, this beetle thrives in unmanaged grassland and open woodland. It feeds and breeds on the Common Toadflax plant. It has been spotted twice on the heath opposite McDonald’s. Last year one was spotted by a member of the Friends, and verified by an expert, near the old rifle range area. Another example of the amazing biodiversity of the Heath.

The Friends Easter Egg hunt on 10th April raised £124. With an entry fee of only £1 there were a lot of enthusiastic hunters and their families searching for painted stones to swap for prizes of chocolate eggs, sweets and lollipops. Our thanks go to Bury Lane Farm and Tesco for donating most of the prizes. All money raised by the Friends goes towards supporting projects on Therfield Heath and Greens.

The success of the archaeological Barrow Walk in March has resulted in a reserve list for the autumn Barrow Walk. The date has yet to be confirmed but if you are interested phone Janet on 01763 2247064 and leave your name and contact number.

8th May. The Friends of Therfield Heath monthly litter pick. Find us between the café and tennis courts. Arrive between 9.30-10.30am and collect your pickers and rubbish bags. Bring your friends, family, children and dogs. Enjoy a walk across the Heath and pick up litter at the same time. Take as long or as little time as suits you but be back to us by 12noon. The Friends will dispose of the rubbish and recycling collected. Don’t forget to wear weather appropriate clothing, it can be windy out there.

11th May 10am -12. This year’s first Plein Air Painting Session led by Joan Munden. Join a friendly group of amateur artists to paint or sketch on the Heath.
