Out and About… Royston and District Motorcycle Show

The cancellation of ‘Freedom Day’ left Royston & District Motor Cycle Club with the decision as to whether to cancel or postpone the annual show. With charities feeling the pinch from the lack of fund-raising events it was decided to reschedule the show to Wednesday 21st July. Hopes are still high towards raising £15000 which will be distributed amongst local charities in early August.

With the June event now cancelled concentration has shifted towards the 21st July when it is hoped all exhibitors are still able to attend.

Meanwhile club organised ride outs for May totalled 875 miles. June being a similar amount.

Tuesday rides are led by club treasurer John Gordon usually covered 130 miles. On average 13 bikes leave Royston at 10am with a coffee stop after an hour. Lunch is taken around 1pm sometimes at a café or a packed lunch is the order of the day. Return to Royston for 4pm. Water seems to be the theme for places to visit. Sometimes the coast or waterways and lakes

Evening rides are shorter covering around 40 miles meeting up whilst restrictions are in place at The British Queen in Meldreth.  Sunday sees the club heading for a late breakfast getting back into town for 1pm.

Many pubs and cafes make bikers feel very welcome. Favourite haunts are Finchingfield, Walkers at Barton Mills, Krazy Horse at Bury St Edmunds and Iron Horse at Market Deeping. Locally The Hoops at Bassingbourn and The Beehive at Hare Street lay on sandwiches for organised visits.

The end of the lockdown in June has brought a swift reaction from Royston & District Motor Cycle Club, who switched this year’s annual show from Wednesday 16th June to the following Wednesday the 23rd.

They could now hold the honour of becoming the first motorcycle show in the country, possibly the first show of any kind locally.

The 2018 show, held at the five acre Eternit Social Club in Meldreth, raised an incredible £15,000 for charity. Amongst the benefactors were the Air Ambulance, Blood Bikers, Milton Hospice along with a whole host of local charities. 2018 was the most successful with 567 bikes flocking to the show.

Refreshments are provided by the Eternit Social Club with local caterers providing a variety of take away foods. All proceeds from the show are passed to charities at a presentation evening in July.

25 exhibitors have signed up with main dealers displaying the latest bikes from Honda, Ducati, BMW, Triumph, and Harley Davidson. The police and fire services will be on hand with their road safety display stands. For those with an eye to the future ‘supercar’ style performance is on hand from the breath taking acceleration achieve from electric motor cycles.

Custom clothing along with off the peg items hope to be doing a roaring trade with everything on hand for the motor cyclist and fans. This is an event for all the community.

The Royston & District Motorcycle Club is an active Club throughout the year. A friendly sociable group of like minded people who enjoy motorcycles and motorcycling in an informal way. Weekend and weekday ride-outs organised home and abroad throughout the year – including winter, weather permitting. You can find them every first and third Wednesday of the month at the Eternit Social Club, Whaddon Road, Meldreth, Royston, Herts SG8 6RL from 8pm
